Cybermage’s Monthly Journal November 2011

Welcome to Cybermage and this look at November 2011.

It has been an interesting month and my interest has been on other things than blogging.

The Iron Jackal is book of the month. Chris Wooding continues the tale of the Ketty Jay, Captain Frey and its motley crew. This time they take on a curse from an ancient civilization

David Weber had me worried a bit with Mission of Honor but returned with a solid in A Rising Thunder if the ARC is anything to go by.

Zombie stories are about the ultimately alienation. Imagine all the people around you turning into mindless creatures out to eat you. But they can be great fun too like inThe Walking Dead, one of the greatest genre shows on the air. I also finished Zone One this month. It has beautiful painting prose with all the usual zombie story attributes.

I have become fascinated with Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s Retrival Artist series. It is a fascinating universe where treaties between sapient races sometimes lead to tragic consequences for humans that doesn’t understand the local laws. Some to human trivial transgressions can lead to death or slavery for life for you and your family. Thus disappearance services that help humans to new identities but also alien death squads that operates on Terran soil. Greed is the driving force behind status quo which does feel very current. The main character Miles Flint is a retrieval artist, something like a private detective that finds disappeared while protecting them from the law. I would characterize it as  futuristic criminal thriller with a bit of social critique. A warm recommendation to the audio-books too.

The Katherine “Kitty” Katt series by Gini Koch was a pleasant surprise. One might think it is just another ‘chick lit’ but it is wacky romping fun. The level you have to suspend your disbelief at is high but manageable. I think I will get the new one Alien Proliferation when it is published on December 6. Probably as an e-book.

It is time to start preparing for Christmas. I was a bit late on December releases but now I am looking forward to two weeks of vacation over the holidays. Blogging is too much fun to stay away from so I expect to be writing a bit more the coming month. The realist in me see a lot of end of the year work that needs to be done too so we will have to wait and see.
