Here is an index to make it easier to find the protagonist you are looking for. I have some ideas for expanding this, maybe with a decade separated list so you can find characters from a specific era or by book title. What do you think?

The lists are organized per author and character name.

Very interesting list. Thank you very much.

I think it would be a good idea to sort it by era, then you could easily follow developments in how women have been and are being portrayed in science fiction.

Thanks again for all these interesting reading suggestions. :-)

You have missed one of my favourite books, Freehold by Michael Z Williamson, and the heroine Kendra Pacelli.

This is a book that I have read several times and will probably do again.
Kendra has to flee form earth when framed for a crime in the United Nations forces, she take asylum in Freehold, and a long section of the book is how she asimilates into the culture, then she ends up having to fight for Freehold in their forces against the UN.

Great! That is one of my favorite books too, I can’t believe I forgot to include Kendra and Freehold. Thanks!

You could try “The Apocalypse Troll” by David Weber. Ludmilla Leonovna is a major character throughout the excellent story. If you haven’t read it it is hard sci-fi not fantasy.

David Weber is also generating a number of good female characters from the younger generation as part of the development of the Honor Harrington universe. Some of them have been fleshed out more in the short stories from the “Worlds of Honour” series. I am sure these will feature as main characters in future books

Here’s one you don’t appear to have catalogued already: Ia a precog, ‘blessed’ with visions of the future….
The book is called  ‘A Soldier’s Duty’ by Jean Johnson, and I thought it a damn good read. Sequel out in July (2012) ‘ An Officer’s Duty’ . Must get my order in soon – just right for my very own b’day present to me !

How did you miss Vonda McIntyre’s Dream Snake, Molly Gloss’s The Dazzle of Day, and Alexie Panshin’s Rite of Passage? Those three are marvelous and two of them, no, all three are award winners.
