High Stakes by Sarah A. Hoyt (Darkship Thieves Universe) a short story

BAEN Books are promoting Darkship Thieves at the moment(It’s one of January’s new science fiction books) so they tweeted about this nice short story from the same universe. It takes place a few centuries earlier. High Stakes is a free online story published on Darwin’s Evolutions – a journal of speculative fiction (homepage).

Read the story online (Story)

The story is about Cassandra Reis, she is undercover, on a mission of sabotage against Babylon Seacity, the city that forced her to run after spilling the beans about the chairman’s affairs to the world press. She had only been lured back to the pleasure-and-crime paradise that was Babylon Seacity by the bait of an Olympus Resident Visa. There was still people here that would like to kill her if they recognised her.

Laying in the dark, she hears someone at the door, she isn’t expecting anyone, could they have discovered her? Read it.

I liked the story and Sarah’s style, I think I got to buy Darkship Thieves, it sounded good before, now I am convinced. You can find it here

Edit: After reading Sarah’s guest rant, Blame It on the Girls, in the same journal, I strongly suspect I have found another favorite author.

It also had this beautiful illustration, Windy City, by Paul Davies. Visit his homepage, this guy is brilliant. He makes awesome pictures.

    Thanks,
I am listening to it now, you shouldn’t worry about the accent, it’s nowhere close to scary :-)
It’s just after the attack and the hunt is on …
I am looking forward to more stories on Darwin’s Evolutions.

Thank you for the mention. You might be amused by this. My reading of chapter one and two of Darkship Thieves: http://darkshipthieves.com/audio/darkship1-2.mp3 (warning: 27MB).

Yes, unfortunately that IS my real accent. I was born in Portugal and didn’t learn English till I was fourteen, so I’m afraid this accent is with me for life. My husband convinced me my accent wouldn’t scare people. (Fingers crossed.)

Evolutions will hopefully be bringing out a couple more stories in the same universe this week. (The hangup is my finishing them.)
