New & Returning TV This Week (May 17-23)

This is the week when the major networks announce their next season schedules. Some announcements have already been made, Chuck, Human Target and V have been renewed and Heroes and FastForward has been canceled. It really sadden me to see Better Off Ted go. See Cancellation Watch and Pilot Watch for the latest news.

Seems next season will be a season of new superheroes and supernatural beings.

This week have some high profile genre finales  Lost, V, Ghost Whisperer and Medium. There are also some high profile non-SF finales I am looking forward to Castle and The Mentalist.

New Series: The Good Guys (FOX) – Pilot

This might be the only new series of interest this month.

In the special series preview of Matt Nix’s new action-comedy, The Good Guys, old-school cop Dan Stark and modern-day detective Jack Bailey expose the big picture of small crime. Pursuing a routine investigation of a stolen humidifier, Jack and Dan are inadvertently thrust into a much larger case involving drug smugglers, hired assassins and a stolen green golf bag. Reminded of the way he busted punks back in the good old days, Dan convinces Jack to go along for the ride, and in their reckless pursuit of justice, the two wind up risking their lives, breaking a flurry of department regulations and reminding their boss, Lieutenant Ana Ruiz, and Jack’s ex-girlfriend, Assistant District Attorney Liz Traynor, why these good guys will be spending many more days investigating seemingly minor crimes in the Pilot episode.

Monday is a nice day.

Chuck (NBC) got renewed for a 4th season! Episode 3.17 – Chuck vs the Living Dead is the last episode before the two hour season finale next week. Papa Bartowski returns, lured there by Elli who is working for the Ring. After his last dream, Chuck asks Morgan to help him on a side mission. Chuck tries to keep his work secret from dad but he might be able to help him with the slow death/insanity he is facing from leakage. [see video below]

The Big Bang Theory (CBS) episode 3.22 – The Staircase Implementation. Leonard tells Penny about how he met Sheldon for the first time…and what happened to the elevator. That is something I wanted to find out from the beginning of the series. [see video below]

Castle (ABC) episode 2.24 – A Deadly GameSeason 2 finale. Nothing is as it seems when Castle and Beckett investigate what appears to be the assassination of an intelligence operative. Meanwhile, Beckett’s romance with Demming threatens her relationship with Castle, forcing them to confront their feelings for each other. [see video below]

I will also try to catch Rules of Engagement this week it is about a sexual harassment suit and the manly sport of golf.

Tuesday, May 18

V (ABC) episode 1.12 – Red Sky1st Season Finale is something I am looking forward to more than expected even before it was renewed. The first season have been uneven but have picked up lately. Val is about to hatch the hybrid and the resistance have to find a way to destroy the V’s new super soldiers. There is also the armada from the V mother world on approach to Earth.[see video below]

Justified (FX) is the strongest nonSF newcomer this spring. In episode 1.10 – The Hammer Raylan tries to make up for the problems that he has caused and leaves his assignment as a judge’s bodyguard in order to track down an old lead.

The Good Wife (CBS) is having a fantastic first season. Redemption is the new Black. Episode 1.22 is called Hybristophilia and  Alicia defends an accused wife killer found handcuffed to a dead woman claiming self defense. [see video below]

Attorney Margaret Allison Hart is back on NCIS (CBS) as well as Abby’s Mexican admirer Alejandro Rivera as a colleague’s murder send shockwaves  through the team and Gibbs uncovers a surprising link in episode 7.23 – Patriot Down

Wednesday, May 19

Not much genre left here since Happy Town was banished to the summer reruns after the unconvincing first three episodes.

Beside from the premiere of The Good Guys described above, I will watch the season finale of Cougar Town. Rumor says that it will change name before returning next season, apparently people don’t want to watch anything with Cougar in it, go figure. Whatever the name it is a funny show.

Fringe 2.22 – Over There Part 2 Season Finale

Leonard Nimoy does his maybe last professional appearance in the Season finale of Fringe. Walter and Olivia visit the other universe. [see video below]

FlashForward 1.21 Countdown goes on my to-watch pile.

Mark continues his interrogation of Hellinger in a desperate attempt to find out when the next blackout will occur; Demetri must choose between helping Janis and Simon break into NLAP to stop the blackout from occurring, or turning the fugitive Simon in to the FBI; Lloyd finds the common denominator that can help him solve the complex equation he was working on in his flashforward; while Tracy fights for her life, Aaron discovers why Jericho was after her; and Nicole wrestles over her strong feelings for Bryce and what would happen if she told him she knew the whereabouts of Keiko

The Mentalist (CBS) – season finale Red Sky in the Morning – Patrick Jane and Kristina’s first date is interrupted by a report of Red John striking again, which is discovered to be a copycat. But when Kristina reaches out to the real Red John, both she and Jane find themselves in grave danger

Ghost Whisperer (CBS) 5.22 – The Children’s Parade – In the season finale Melinda’s investigation of a poltergeist in the hospital leads to a showdown with supernatural forces terrorizing her and her son.

Medium (CBS) 6.22 – It’s a Wonderful Death – When Allison’s brain tumor resurfaces, its aftermath could have life-altering consequences for her friends and family in the 6th Season Finale.

Stargate Universe (Syfy) 1.18 – Subversion

Dr. Rush has a disturbing dream in which he is back on Earth, divulging sensitive information at a covert meeting of the Lucian Alliance. But, strangely, he does so as Colonel Telford’s.

He confides this unsettling dream to Colonel Young who wonders if there may have been some residual memory overlap during the doctor’s switch with Telford two days before. Suspecting that Telford may be a spy for the Alliance, Rush convinces Young to let him trade places with the Colonel again. Using the communications stones Rush returns to Earth hoping to find some way to confirm his hunch. Meanwhile, Young has a plan of his own, but will need the assistance of General Jack O’Neil and Dr. Daniel Jackson.

I wouldn’t forget Gravity on Starz! Quirky and funny nonSF.
