New Science Fiction Books in September 2010

Time to have a look at September for new science fiction books to order. Here is my pick and a few other books I found interesting. It looks like a good month lots of books I will read as soon as I can unwrap them.

Many of these books are on my 13 SF for the rest of 2010 book list Guardians of Paradise, Out of the Dark, Quantum Thief, What Distant Deep, Dreadnought and The Truth of Valor.

Vampires and space opera, it sounds cheesy but it is a Weber book so I am in. The first news made this out to be a new series but later reports says it is not.

Expanded from a short story that first appeared in George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois’s anthology Warriors, this trilogy kickoff blends elements of military science fiction and dark fantasy. In the very near future, Earth has been targeted for colonization by a galactic empire known as the Hegemony. Deemed “lunatic local sentients” by a survey team that witnessed King Henry V and his troops slaughtering the French at Agincourt, humankind has essentially been written off as bloodthirsty, expendable barbarians. When the Hegemony’s henchmen, the doglike Shongairi, show up to conquer Earth, the resistance is beyond anything they had ever imagined, especially when vampires appear to help the humans. Weber pulls off this conceit in audacious style with a focus on military-powered action that will thrill fans of his Honor Harrington series, and he keeps the pedal to the metal right up to the almost unbelievable conclusion.

I read a short story by Hannu, he is a fantastic writer. This promises to be a real good posthuman series.

Jaine is another author I love. Read my take on the previous books in the Hidden Empire: Consorts of Heaven and Principles of Angels.

I ordered this book in November last year. Daniel and Adele has been wonderful companions so far. This is usually uncomplicated enjoyable military scifi.

Tanya is really good at characters and dialog making this one an easy choise.

Turns out civilian life is a lot rougher than she’d imagined-salvage operators are losing both cargo and lives to pirates. And when they attack the Promise, Craig is taken prisoner and Torin is left for dead.

When Torin finds out why the pirates needed Craig, she calls in the Marines to get him back-and to stop the pirates from changing the balance of power in known space.

This is probably a hit or miss kind of thing. It is Patrick A Vanner’s first novel in a series of military space opera. I have this thing for female protagonist so I will give it a try.

This one sounds interesting but could be a hit or miss kind of thing.

The book is dedicated to Father Richard Toll and there is an excerpt from the sequel Enigma at the end of the book.

This is a book about a historical conspiracy and the pressure of change that will rip any static society apart.

The protagonists are Jake, a spy sent by mainstream humanity to obtain the secret of the Badger Metal and Sissy born with the mark of all seven castes, soon to become High Priestess of Harmony.

The Author

C. F. Bentley is a pseudonym Irene Radford uses for her science fiction novels. Harmony is the first novel by her I ever read but I think I will read more. From what it looks like she has written a number of fantasy books. The theme seems to be dragons and Merlin. More information on Irene’s homepage www.ireneradford.com.

World building

The Confederated Star System is at war with the alien Marillon Empire and they both need Badger Metal for their starships. Harmony is the only supplier which is why Jake is sent there to find out the secret on how to make it. Harmony is a seven world pocket empire that was founded by an earth cult. It closed its borders fifty years ago and they have had no outside contact ever since including no export of Badger Metal.

Harmony with its rigid cast society is like an onion of deception where we see layer after layer being stripped off. Marriages between casts are forbidden and when you are born into a cast (carry the cast mark) you are there for life.

The world is consistent, interesting and realistic even if it borders on on the absurd at times. There is a slight resemblance in feel from some Harry Harrison novels even if the world is much more complex here.

Plot

Jake used to be a fighter pilot before he screwed up and was saved by a secret intelligence organization that takes on space opera manners. There is sex very early in the novel but not very descriptive. He is first sent to The Lost Colony of Harmony (they broke of communication with their mother world and formed a new casteless society) to try to obtain an alternative to Badger Metal but it fails so he is sent to Harmony undercover as one of the Military Cast and he eventually end up as Sissy’s bodyguard.

Harmony is going through an unstable period with freaky weather and earthquakes which the cultists see as the planet being upset. Sissy is a mutant, born and raised by Worker parents but with all seven cast markings, usually that would make her an outcast of society to be eventually exterminated in one of their concentration camps/asylum but she hides it with cosmetics. During a catastrophic earthquake she discovers that she can channel its energy and commune with Harmony saving the city from destruction. The High Priest finds her and makes her the new High Priestess against the wishes of the former’s family who have had that title for generations. The High Priest thinks she will be easy to manipulate with her simple upbringing. He couldn’t be more wrong as she starts to put things right.

What follows is political intrigue, assassination attempts, deception but also revelation of the truth about their pasts. It is fast paced with unexpected twists and a lovely love story just like I like it.

Characterization

Jake is well developed with his doubt about the mission and the moral dilemma he faces. He is also appalled by the rigid caste society and the way the high casts manipulate the lower.

Sissy grows from ignorant worker to a formidable leader of her people. She is a strong believer in family and the high castes ways disgust her. You root for her from the beginning as she is so easy to love.

My View

There is a quite a bit of social commentary in this story and the characters, which makes it more than just a good rump. I like Harmony, it mixes military with space opera and romance in a fast flowing easy to read experience. It was also a damn fun book to read. I had to laugh out loud in delight at some of the twists the story took to the amusement of my dear ones. In conclusion Harmony is not great literature but it is a fun read which should please both readers of military science fiction, space opera and romance.

This is not an agent Cormac novel but it takes place om Masada, a planet that figures in almost all books in that series. I love the Cormac books, so it would be hard to sit this one out. It is also on my 13 SF books for the rest of 2010 list.

The Theocracy has been dead for twenty years, and the Polity rules on Masada. But the Tidy Squad consists of rebels who cannot accept the new order. Their hate for surviving theocrats is undiminished, and the iconic Jeremiah Tombs is at the top of their hitlist.

Escaping his sanatorium Tombs is pushed into painful confrontation with reality he has avoided since the rebellion. His insanity has been left uncured, because the near mythical hooder called the Technician that attacked him all those years ago, did something to his mind even the AIs fail to understand. Tombs might possess information about the suicide of an entire alien race.

The war drone Amistad, whose job it is to bring this information to light, recruits Lief Grant, an ex-rebel Commander, to protect Tombs, along with the black AI Penny Royal, who everyone thought was dead. The amphidapt Chanter, who has studied the bone sculptures the Technician makes with the remains of its prey, might be useful too.

Meanwhile, in deep space, the mechanism the Atheter used to reduce themselves to animals, stirs from slumber and begins to power-up its weapons.

The Prescot family were miners. At one time, they were contracted to develop technology for a mineral rich but uninhabitable system. Gradually, all the investors shied away. Then the Prescots broke through with the technology needed to exploit entire planets, and incidentally develop domed playgrounds for the perversely rich, including indoor ski slopes and cable cars over megavolcanos, casinos and rides. This created the economic problem of being the richest people in the universe, having more money than most governments and effectively unlimited resources. Money is a small blessing when enemies are quite willing to spend billions for the chance at trillions. Bryan Prescot and his daughter might as well have targets painted on their backs for the thugs, kidnappers, and assassins their competitors would throw at them. Bodyguards were necessary – highly trained bodyguards who could be bought once and be utterly loyal no matter the circumstances. This is a series I have been thinking of taking up for quite a while.

I love singularity related books, and this one had an interesting description.

I love the Bolos series.

Lets have a look at June for books. I usually check my pre-orders mid May and then revisit the list around the start of June. These are the books I am interested in. I try to put new never before published books here, for me there is no difference if the book is first published in the US, UK or in Australia. The delivery time to the far north is about the same. Review of Tour of the Merrimack Book 2: Wolf Star by R. M. Meluch

It is always with anticipation and a bit of worry I open the second book in a series where I loved the first book. Will it be as good as the first one? Will it be more of the same? It’s not often an author succeeds in resetting the world and start over in an alternative timeline. Yes, we return to square one with the story, with the characters reset, but us knowing what happened to them at the end of the last book. Rebeca M. Meluch bring us another mesmerizing tale of warriors, Romans, Americans, star ships and relentless aliens.

The U.S. Merrimack was the finest battleship in Earth’s fleet, able to withstand the best the Palatine Empire could throw at them. Only her sister ship, the Monitor, was her equal. So when the Palatine forces secretly captured Monitor, Merrimack’s security was compromised-and that was just the opening salvo of a whole new stage of war between Palatine and Earth.

A time paradox was created towards the end of The Myriad and the Universe protected itself, reseting to a different timeline with slightly different reality. Rom didn’t die here either, and they did break free from Earth just like before. But here the Hive hasn’t attacked. The Palantire Empire and Earth are at war. The plot: USS Merrimack is on a deep strike mission into Roman territory to find their new Slingshot facility and destroy it. Slingshot technology allows a ship to instantly skip space between slingshot and catcher stations possibly bypassing hundreds of light years held by the enemy. Earth have the technology and have been using it to bypass the Romans and expand towards the center of our galaxy.

Unknown to them their sister ship USS Monitor have been captured by the Romans and they are now herded into a trap. The space battles here are just as good as in The Myriad but different when they are human to human. Much is about warriors facing warriors.

Captain Ferragut plays a major role in this novel too. Agustus is missing to a large extent since USS Merrimack doesn’t have a Roman Liaison Officer here. He is here though, just fighting for the other side. I think I am not alone in hoping for more Ferragut Agustus interaction in the coming books, that was a good part I enjoyed with the first book.

Calli Carmel is one of the main characters here, and her daring exploits as an undercover Roman is tense and funny. Kerry Blue and Cowboy’s story takes another twist in this installment of the Merrimack universe, still entertaining. Colonel Steele is still carrying the torch for Kerry and causing all kinds of merriment to the reader. Even the Captain is on the brink of indulging in relations. I am in awe of Rebeca’s ability to recreate the same characters but with a different history and still make them as good as in the first book. Only thing I miss is Agustus but I expect him to be back in book three.

If you thought the Hive was gone, you thought wrong, before it is all over they will be back and the Merrimack’s luck will turn, and turn, and turn many times before the magnificent finale.

You could call Wolf Star an entertaining do over of The Myriad and I liked the Myriad a lot. The Time paradox resets the world and the reader gets to explore the same charming characters’ alternative history once again before going where they never gone before.

Wolf Star is another great space opera by R. M. Meluch with fantastic characters and epic combat scenes. It made me happy to read the story and I am even happier now when I have the two next books in the series. Happy reading!
