Seems like this episode is controversial, I have avoided reading any of the many posts but as I understand it is considered racist by some and second rate by others (This could all be a misunderstanding from my side, but that is the preconceptions I have when viewing). I will try to build my own opinion as I go along. I really hope not because I liked the pilot a lot and wish it to succeed. We need stronger genre shows. News came during the day that AMC already renewed The Walking Dead for a second season of 13 episodes that ought to be good news.

Let’s see…

In this episode Rick meets up with some other survivors in the City and they have to resort to rather gruesome gore to fool the zombies and escape from the city. I could definitely live with the characters even the white redneck bigot and the afro American rapper. So what if the characters are a bit stereotypical. It is a zombie show!

I think its way to early to tell who these characters are. Reasonable we meet them when they are in panic over being surrounded by hordes of zombies lured there by Rick’s shooting. It is still one of the best new shows I have seen this year.

We leave Rick and his new friends as they leave town to join up with the people outside, which includes Rick’s wife, son and his best friend who is banging his wife. Next episode should be interesting in that regard.

Castiel was taken by Angles earlier and believed to be dead or at least out of the count, now he is back with no recollection of what happened to him and with his ‘Angelic Battery’ all discharged, so Bobby have to wire him money for airplane fare. I would have liked to see him on that airplane. While he take this more mundane way of transport Dean and Sam goes after Pestilence at a hospital.

Matt Frewer plays a magnificent Pestilence, I love his character in Eureka and this is almost as good. Sam and Dean are detected sneaking in the corridors and Pestilence twist his ring and infect them with deadly viruses. When all seamed lost Castiel storms in and save the day, at least almost. Pestilence’s last words are “You are to late”.

Back at bobby’s hideout they learn that Bobby sold his soul to Crowley. I hope they don’t kill of the King of the Crossroads this season, he is such an enjoyable villain. The scene that also was in the promo with Bobby being asked “Did you kiss him?” No! Then Crawley show them the picture on his cell.

Sam and Dean’s talk was good when they gear up Crawley jumping into the conversation was also good “You guys are lucky you have your looks” when they are a bit clueless. Castiel bitching with Bobby about being useless was also an amusing scene. This is the kind of humor I love with Supernatural.

Remember that future episode, with zombies affected by a disease? The vaccine Pestilence’s henchman was brewing is about to go national in a few days. They have to stop that and get Death’s ring at the same time.

Crawley is a wicked, wicked demon, he gives back Bobby the use of his legs, Bobby is so happy that you can see him considering selling his soul again.

Sam and Bobby goes after the warehouse the vaccine will be shipped from. Good fight there, Sam saves at least ten people and in the end Castiel finds himself useful as he blows the head of a Zombie that is strangling Sam.

Death has a nice theme song as he rides up in his grey Mustang (I think it was a Mustang). Crowley and Dean have to look for him before finding him in a Pizza place. Death is eating Pizza. Would you eat a Pizza offered by death? Dean does. Death wants the devil’s control off. He calls him a bratty child having a tantrum. He gives the ring to Dean on the conditions that Sam is the only one that can stop Lucifer, and Dean has to promise to let him. Dean promises him. Remember you can’t cheat death, Death warns him before teaching him to use the rings.

They now have all the rings. Death told Dean how to operate the rings. Next episode is the season finale “Swan Song” airs May 13.

Haven centers around the town of Haven in Main, where else, which turns out to be a longtime refuge for people that are afflicted with a remarkable range of supernatural abilities.

Emily Rose (Jericho, Brothers and Sisters, ER) plays lead role of Audrey Parker, the shrewd and confident FBI agent with a lost past who arrives in the small town of Haven to solve the murder of a local ex-con. Before long, her natural curiosity lands her in the epicenter of activity in this curious enclave.

This feels a bit similar to Gated and Eureka in setup even if the subject matter is different. I don’t mean that negative in any way, I love Eureka.

As the townspeople’s dormant abilities begin to express themselves, Audrey helps keep these forces at bay while discovering the many secrets of Haven – including one surrounding her own surprising past in this extraordinary place.

Lucas Bryant (Queer as Folk, Dollhouse) will play Nathan Wuornos, the wry local cop who soon becomes Audrey’s partner. Bristling under the thumb of his father, the Chief of Police, Nathan has a quiet, controlled demeanor that often clashes with Audrey’s feisty one: a dichotomy that also makes them perfect complements. As events in the town begin to unfold at a surprising pace, Nathan’s usual controlled sense of calm is put to the test.

Also among the citizens of this eccentric town is Duke Crocker played by Eric Balfour (24, Six Feet Under), a charming yet mysterious jack-of-all-trades. Though Duke outwardly appears to be a free spirit who lives an unobtrusive life on his boat, it becomes apparent that his mellow demeanor may conceal a much darker agenda.

Production on Haven is expected to commence in Spring 2010 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. So far there isn’t any photos out from the filming.

The team behind Haven are heavily from The Dead Zone team.

The pilot is written by Sam Ernst (Shrek the Third, The Dead Zone) and Jim Dunn (Shrek the Third, The Dead Zone) who will also serve as executive producers on the series.

Is Zombies this year’s Vampires? Maybe for AMC as they pick up The Walking Dead to series. It Premieres in October tied to the network’s popular movie franchise FearFest. So far we have only one cast Jon Bernthal (The Pacific, The Ghost Writer) who will play Shane, Grimes’ partner. Bloody-Disgusting have what they call a forerunner in the cast for the lead character Rick Grimes, Lee Miller (Hackers, Dracula 2000, “Eli Stone”).

Production begins in June in Atlanta for the six episodes of season one.

The comic goes on to explore the challenges of life in a world overrun by zombies who take a toll on the survivors, and sometimes the interpersonal conflicts present a greater danger to their continuing survival than the zombies that roam the country. Over time, the characters are changed by the constant exposure to death and some grow willing to do anything to survive.

Built on the comics with the same name by “Robert Kirkman has created a world in The Walking Dead with real characters, real human emotion, and great stories that paint a very smart, sophisticated, and layered picture,” said Joel Stillerman, the channel’s senior VP of original programming, production and digital content. “In that respect, this is the quintessential AMC version of a property like this, and I think that is what makes these books resonate for so many people.”

The Walking Dead has been published by Image Comics since 2003.

Felicia Day in action, gun in hand, throwing knife strapped to her boot and the burning remains of a werewolf in front is the first awesome picture  from Syfy’s take on The Little Red Riding Hood – What happened after? RED is about the descendants of the red caped girl, who with Syfy’s usual delightful twist is werewolf hunters.

Felicia looks perfect for the role and I loved her in the Guild.

I really like Syfy’s re-imagining of old classics like Tin Man (The Wizard of Oz) and Alice [review].

We don’t know when it will air, but it usually takes a year from filming to air so early 2011 is the best guess.

Plot

You have to have faith to be a starship captain, since your engine is a captured and defiled god. The first line of the book is “It was time to whip the god” – just like that. Captain Ean Tephe has a strong faith and his religious superiors uses it and him when their god come under assault from new and strong gods. They send him on a mission to find converts to strengthen his god with new faith. A mission that will challenge his faith and his grasp of reality in unexpected and sinister ways.

Idea

The main focus of the story is faith. How strong faith might move mountains, but also the difference between reflecting and challenged faith compared to blind faith that doesn’t allow challenges. I am not sure that is what John intended, but I feel it has something to tell us all about the follies of blind faith. I should add that this is not a religious book even if it is about faith, there are no identifiable religions in it.

Characterization

One of John Scalzi’s strength is his vivid characters and his uncanny ability to make you feel what they do. I like Ean, I understand his motivations and I chill to the bone like he does.

World building

There is something gothic over the world John Scalzi conjure. A dystropic interstellar empire run by a militaristic church, serving one God that has conquered and captured other gods to be used to power the starships that keeps it together. It is not a world I would like to live in but it is an interesting world I would like to read more about.

My View

The God Engines is a chilling horror story set in a world with living manifested gods, so it has to be fantasy? Well, maybe, there is a lot of  Space Opera and science fiction in this fantasy story. I think it’s magnificent and I love the inventiveness of the story, using gods as engines! I am just sorry it is so short, the plot could easily have been made into a full length novel. I say convinced that it would be easy for John Scalzi, him being such a fantastic writer (nudge, nudge).

Sam and Dean enter a mental hospital as patients after a series of suicides. The other patients complain about monsters that come and take them. And the Doctor in charge tell them “There is no such things as monsters”.

It is Amusing when Sam And Dean tell the psychiatrist about causing the Apocalypse and hunting demons. It’s  not as funny as the rectal exam they get from the nurse as part of their entry exam.

They visit a fellow inmate/hunter in the loonie bin Ted. He was the one that called them.

They soon discover that it is a Wraith they are after. But then things start to go down hill. Is it the Doctor or the clingy patient or the hot doctor in Deans head. Both Dean and Sam become affected by a mental illness with hallucinations and rage attacks. Something is fucking with their minds.

Good episode,  I am  glad they are back, and that they are back together.

Talk about an awesome season. Ghost Whisperer is better than ever. This new format really works for me. One good story to tell in each episode ending with something that pushes the arc forward.

Season five starts five years after season four. Arc wise season five is building up to something, the shadows are planing something bad, even the Book of Changes hide from them. The shadows by the way is made of broken people and even the watchers are afraid of them. The Hospital have been a center for a lot of bad, what’s up with the Stitches broad?

• Melissa is still happy with her shop, she is a bit concerned she can’t see Aiden’s new friends.
• Jim is a doctor and he gets more to do this season, which I like.
• Aiden goes to school and start to show his powers, he sees and befriend shiny ones, he can also see shadows. 
• Eli is still at the University and still not popular with the administration
• Delia have her own Real Estate business. She also develops a love interest.
• Ned is in College studying the Occult.

I am very happy with this change for the better I love Jennifer Love Hewitt and I used to like Ghost Whisperer a lot but season four wasn’t so great. Season five so far surpass all of my expectations. It’s a return to the high quality occult mysteries that once hocked me on the show.

The End of Days. Sam broke the last seal and the apocalypse  starts. From the begining Supernatural was planned for five seasons. Its been said that this will be the last season of Supernatural, but I hope not. This is a show that continues to interest and fascinate. I want more.

The new intro is great and short.

Remember that Sam is The Vessel, Michael’s Sword.

5.01 Symphaty for the Devil - The devil finds his vessel and ascend to the world. 

You get slammed with a lot of information this episode. 

5.02 Good god, Y’all - Bobby is in hospital. Castiel starts the search for God. The brothers head up to River Pass, Colorado, A town isolated from the world, it seems to be overrun by Demons. Or is it? Presenting War, the Horseman. Sam have to face his addiction to demon blood. War’s power is in his ring, which the Winchesters eventually figure. The brothers split at the end of this episode.

Good action and the episode is related to the season arc and drives the story forward. I liked it.

5.03 Free to Be You and Me - Sam tries to give up hunting, doing bad. Sam wakes up in bed with Jess, his girlfriend, the dead one, and she lays it on him. While Dean continue to hunt, missing Sam. Castel  asks for help trapping and interrogating the archangel Rafael the one who killed him. Rafael walks the earth in Main while Sam’s town also has omens of the apocalypse. Dean and Castel capture and interrogate Rafael. He believes god is dead, but who resurrected Castel? Rafael believe Lucifer did it.
The hunters that comes to Sams town take a beating and the demons tells them the truth about Sam. That Sam broke the last seal and started the apocalypse. They take Sam’s girlfriend and threaten her to get Sam to drink demon blood and vanquish the demons.
Jess turns out to be Lucifer, he is still looking for Sam, his true vessel.

Castel as Deans FBI sidekick is funny. Castel is a virgin which Dean sets out to fix, it ain’t easy.
Sam have a love story with a girl in the bar he works in. Good pacing, great interest. I like this season so far.
I wonder if god will be revealed as a girl in the end?

5.04 The End – Dean and Castel look for a cult of demon killers. Sam tells Dean about him being Lucifer’s vessel. Sam wants in again for redemption. Dean don’t think they should be together.
Dean wake up five years into the future. The world is in ruins and demons are everywhere. He runs into a bunch and are saved by the military. He was sent by the Angels to see what his action to refuse Sam might lead to. And its not pretty. Dean meets future-Dean. Lucifer is wearing Sam and Dean-Dean set out to kill Lucifer.
Lucifer-Sam meet now-Dean after killing future-Dean. Dean refuse Michael again and joins up with Sam.
The Winchester boys are back togheter again!

Castel is a  joy in the now. He is hooked on girls in the future. Love him.
Dean-Dean is a nice twist.

5.05 Fallen Idols – A racing car comes to life and kills the owner is the beginning of this episode, it looks like is the car James Dean was killed in, but it isn’t. Famous dead icons is killing people in a small town. Dean and Sam to the rescue. This is the Paris Hilton episode. The look on their faces is priceless.
Dean lets Sam drive!

Nice sidestory, brings the relationship between Sam and Dean forward.

 5.06 I Believe the Children Are Our Future -  A babysitter is killed by herself or by a television dog. A brush and itching powder might be involved. Next a old man gets electrocuted by a Joy buzzer. The the ugly tooth fairy attacks. Eventually they realize fantasies are becoming real. Then the meet Jessie, a kid that changes reality without realizing it. From his mother they learn that she was possessed by a demon for nine months. Castel tell them the kid is Anti-Christ. When Castel tries to kill him he is turned in to a miniature.

I guess Jessie will be a key to defeating the devil or a segue to the next season. For now he went surfing.

5.07 The Curious Case Of Dean Winchester – A man turns old in front of the mirror. He had been playing poker. They tell Bobby and he comes and find the game before them and he loses twenty five years.  Dean decides to play for it and loses. Old-Dean doesn’t have much stamina. Sam plays poker like a god.

Old-dean is a change of pace. “He is adorable” says the sexy maid. This episode is entertaining but doesn’t bring the arc forward.

5.08 Changing Channels  – The Dean and Sam are trapped in various contemporary TV shows. It all starts out with the Incredible Hulk killing a man.They are first in Gray’s Anatomy, then it is surviving a Japanese gameshow, commercials, sitcoms. Catiel tries to get them out. But it’s not the Trixter they think. CSI is a light touch. Knightrider lol!!! The Trickster is the Archangel Gabriel.

Interesting explanation for the vessels by Gabriel. He suggest brother has to kill brother for it all to end. Dean counters with Gabriel being too afraid to stand up to his family, Gabriel might come around to the winchester side

5.09 The Real Ghostbusters - Sam and Dean are tricked into attending a Supernatural convention by their super-fan Becky. Chuck announcesthey are going to start publishing Supernatural again. At the hunt a real ghost appear and the Winchesters get involved. They don’t know they got a tail. Two fans playing the game find the map to where the bodies are buried. After a fight in the graveyard, and the burning of the remains the fans are chocked. But the story isn’t ended there. They vanquished the mother that kept the three murdering kids in check. With the help of their fans it all works out in the end. Becky gets the hots for Chuck in the end and then they tell Sam – humor.

Arc wise they get a lead to the Colt.

5.10 Abandon All Hope… – They go after Cowley who has the Colt. They make a deal with Crowley to kill the devil. When they arrive in town it seems empty. Castel sees a lot of  reapers and follows one of them to Lucifer. Seems like Lucifer is preparing to summoning the Angel of Death. The group is hunted by invisible Hell Hounds and Jo is wounded. The Winchesters and Co are holed up in a hardware store and Castel is held prisoner. Bobby researches the place where Lucifer will do the ceremony. Jo’s wounds are lethal so she sacrifice her life to give the others a chance at the Devil. The Lucifer-Sam similarities are interesting. Unfortunately in the end the colt can’t kill Lucifer.

Got to love Crowley. Drinking games with an angel is also notable in this episode. Pitythere is such a wait until the two last episodes. All in all it has been an awsome season.

5.11 Sam, Interrupted. Will air 21 January 2010

5.12 Series or Season Finale? Will air in 28January 2010.

I don’t remember exactly when I read this book, it was more than a week ago though and after the 8th.

The Great Were Revelation goes well at first, then weres turn up dead in Bon Temps, another mystery for Sookie Stackhouse, bar maid, telepath and irresistible to vampires.

Here we get to know more about Sookie and her ancestry and history.

There is also a tiny Fairy War.

Hurricane Katrina and the explosion at the vampire Summit has Louisiana’s supernatural community hard pressed. Sookie is safe but dazed and her were-tiger boyfriend is among the missing.

Sookie meets her great-grandfather Niall Brigant, a Fairy.

There is mysterious deaths among the local Were community. Sookie gets involved as Friend Of The Pack. They discover an even bigger plot. The conflict decimate the weres and leaves Alcide Herveaux as the new Pack Leader.

The power vacuum in the vampire society bring in opportunist from Vegas that try to take over Louisiana from the injured Queen Sophie-Anne Leclerq, and Sookie ends up in the middle of it, determined to help her friends. Through a very thorough “ambush” Felipe de Castro, King of Nevada, becomes the new King of Louisiana and Arkansas. Eric Northman survive as the only sheriff to do so by being more bad-ass than the invaders. King Filipe accepts his fealty.

Sookie doesn’t have it easy, feeling betrayed by Bill and getting used to the new relationship with the sexyQuinn and instead of exploring and enjoying it, she has to attend an all-important central US Vampire Summit as the telepathic spy of Queen Sophie-Anne Leclerq.

Sophie-Anne will be tried during the event for murdering her husband, the King of Arkansas. The summit is tense and the queen is wakened by hurricane damage to New Orleans. And there are some vamps who would like to exploit her weakness to settle scores. Sookie knows the queen is innocent.

The finale is explosive.

Sookie has a date with Quinn, the weretiger from the last book. When they are attacked by two werewolfs who Quinn makes short works of. Sookie are not sure they where trying to kill him or her?

But ´Sookie soon has more pressing problems. Her Cousin Hadley, a vampire has been murdered and Sookie has inherited her apartment. So Sookie has to go off to pre-hurricane New Orleans to solve the murder mystery. You doesn’t say no when a demon tells you to go.

It is tricky business, New Orleans being the home of the dead, there is a witch that lives downstairs and Hadley’s lover was Sophie-Ann Leclerq, the Queen of Louisiana, an omnisexual vampire, whose political marriage to the King of Arkansas occurred the night before Hadley’s demise.

I especially like Amelia Broadway a cool young witch and Hadleys landlady. She and sookie are soon up to their necks in magical troubles starting with the newly made vampire in closet.

Eric and Bill comes and visit Sookie. Bill reveal that he came to Bon Temps on the orders of the Queen after Hadly told her of Sookies telepathicpowers, to get her services for the Queen, seducing her if necessary.  Sookie is heartbroken and furious so she sends Bill away.

The end is action packed with some were-related kidnappings, Quinn and Sookie together and a great Ball at the Castle …

Someone is killing non humans. A sniper is loose in Bon Themps killing mainly shape shifters.

Alcide the werewolf tries to use Sookie at the Packmaster Contest, that doesn’t sit well with her. Quinn a magnificent weretiger moderates the event.

Jason is having trouble with the werephanters, they believe he is the shooter. Calvin Norris is the leader of the inbreed werepanther village he fancies Sookie.

Sam Merlotte gets shot and have to ask Eric for a replacement bartender.

Half of Sookies house burns down and she is saved by her Fairy godmother Claudine.

Another troubled time for our Sookie. She really do have trouble with men.

Sookies luck turns from bad to worse, Bill the computer geek vampire goes to Peru for research when Eric turns up naked with no memory of who he is. Witches have attacked Bon Temps and one of them have cursed Eric. Sookie is hired to house Eric while a way to fight back is found. A Witch Coven has taken up residence in the next big town. No-memories Eric and Sookie eventually begin a sexual relationship, Eric falls in love, he even offer to leave his life as a Sheriff and come and live with Sookie.

A sub plot is about the disappearance of Jason, Sookies brother. It introduces a nearby inbreed village of conflicted werepanthers.

The climax of the story is the combined shifter and vampire attack on the werewolf and vampire blood boosted coven. The witches are defeated. The lead witch is forced to reverse the curse on Eric before being put down. Eric forgets everything that has transpired during the curse.

At the end of the book, Jason is rescued from his were-panther captors, but not before being bitten.

A real Fairy, Claudine is introduced in this book. Here she saves Sookie when she falls asleep behind the wheel.

This might be the 3rd season of True blood. There is more Shapeshifters in this one.

Vampire Bill is kidnapped in the city of Shreveport while doing secret work for the queen of Louisiana, and Sookie sets out to rescue him with the help of the handsome werewolf Alcide Herveaux. Bill is being held and tortured by his maker, Lorena. With the help of Alcide, Eric the Viking vampire and Bubba Sookie eventually rescues Bill, only to break off their relationship when she understands that Bill has been unfaithful with Lorena (Bill also raped Sookie, which also might have something to do with it).

The original version of True Blood season 2. Love it.

Living Dead in Dallas covers season 2 of True Blood but there are major differences:

• Lafayette dies at the beginning (in the car)
• Maryann isn’t as evil and her name is Callisto. Eric pays her tribute and she moves on.
• It isn’t Tara in that car who meets Maryann, it’s Sookie. She send Sookie with a message for Eric.

I will be back with my view on the difference between the book and True Blood the tv series. I recommend that you read it and watch it.

After watching almost 2 seasons of the awesome True BloodTV series I, a compulsory reader, finally came around to the source. Charlaine Harris Southern Vampires Series have the same light, straightforward style the TV series have. It might not be Great Literature but I couldn’t lay them down when I started to read. I finished the 6 first books in less than five days. I understand that the book series was a success even before TV.

You all know the story: It’s about Sookie, a beautiful southern lady girl, who works as a barmaid, who is considered weird, who hears people’s thoughts and who is attracted to the dead silent type.

Dead Until Dark is about how she meets Bill the vampire and falls in love. You know the story from TV. The mystery is as in the TV series, who kills fang bangers?

A difference is that in the book, Bill gets a job with the Queen to protect Sookie and him from Eric. It is also Eric who kills the embezzling vampire bartender in the book, thus totally eradicating the subplot on the TV series where Bill has to take care of a teenage vampire.

One lovable recurring character from the books is missing from TV, Bubba. Elvis is never named in the books, but Bubba is the King. Something went wrong when he was turned though so he is mentally challenged and don’t react well to mentions of his former name or life.

Tara has a minor role in the book and Arlene is Sookies best friend.

You can safely say that the TV series have left the book story in parts. Though I think they are true to the feeling of the books.

Dollhouse
This series still leaves me undecided. I think it is because after 9 episodes I still haven’t built a relationship with the characters. But I guess that it is hard as they get different personalities every episode. Of course Eliza and the other actives are gorgeous. The problems a technology like this would create should be a good ground for a TV series. But this one needs to find some kind of path. It is all over the place at the moment.

Castle ***Newish***
I really like the characters in Castle. It still remind me of other shows so maybe its not that original. But it is fun.

Southland ***NEW***
New cop series in the footsteps of Shield with a bit of O.C. mixed in. Edit: It got canceled then moved to another network.

Ghost Whisperer
Still goes strong, and back to the Ghosts now that Sam remembers and are back with Melinda.
