Are you curious about what new genre shows that are cooking for next season. I am. Orders to series usually happens from now up to the middle of May and more likely the closer to the upfront week it gets.

Be warned this article may contain spoilers!

It will be interesting to see how it goes. I like to play a little game to see how right or wrong I am when the decision comes in May. But I don’t want to be too cynical so I am doing my dream lineup so I can bitch about how wrong the real pickup is. What’s your dream lineup?

My Dream Lineup

  1. Adjustment Bureau, The (Syfy)
  2. Beautiful People (NBC)
  3. Untitled Robert Hewitt Wolfe Project (Syfy)
  4. Untitled Dan Fogelman Project (Fox)
  5. Untitled Warehouse 13 H. G. Wells Spin-Off Project (Syfy)
  6. Isabel (NBC)
  7. Stranger Planet (Fox)
  8. 666 Park Ave (ABC)
  9. Cloak & Dagger (ABC)
  10. The Eye (ABC)
  11. Untitled Fazekas & Butters Project (CW)
  12. Robots (Comedy Central)

I prefere science fiction with aliens and space travel but there is not much of that in this bunch. I would love to see something that has to do with colonizing space.

666 Park Ave (ABC)

Based on Gabriella Pierce‘s series by the same name. Witches on the upper east side no less according to the books. TV series usually take some liberties.  The show is set in a historic apartment building in New York City and centers on the young couple that become its managers. They unwittingly begin to experience supernatural occurrences, which complicate and endanger the lives of everyone in the residence. Could be a mystery of the week kind of show. A drama pilot from writer David Wilcox (Fringe), Warner Bros.

Antichrist (ABC)

Not much is known about this pilot. It is a drama about a young astrophysics student who learns his destiny lies not in science but somewhere between heaven and hell. It will be set in New York City against the backdrop of the Presidential race of 2012. It is supposedly inspired by the latest presidential elections whatever that means.

Arrow (CW)

Smallville fans rejoice as CW makes a revised take on the DC Comics-turned-”Smallville” hero Green Arrow, a.k.a. Oliver Queen, a billionaire who dresses like Robin Hood and uses trick arrows to fight crime. Guggenheim and Kreisberg will pen the teleplay off a story by Berlanti and Guggenheim, which “sets him in a new world with an original story that is not based on the comics.

Beauty & Beast (CW)

Revival of the cult 1987-1990 series that aims to not only modernize and CW-up the love story but also add a procedural twist.

Beast (ABC)

The ABC orders a pilot of B&B a week after CW announced its pilot. The ABC version is from Jonathan Steinberg (Human Target, Jericho) and described as “a fantastical re-imagining of the classic fairy tale set in a mythical, dangerous world wherein a beautiful and tough Princess discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast.”

Beautiful People (NBC)

Android stories seems to be on the rise. In the near future families of mechanical humans exist to service the human population. Everything is okay until some of the mechanicals begins to “awaken”. It centers on the very wealthy Lydia (Frances Conroy) whose late husband founded the firm that makes Mechanicals. James Murray then is set as her son, “a handsome and very successful attorney who’s lived a rich and privileged life but makes a name for himself by publicly suggesting that Mechanicals might have civil rights – a notion that’s largely scoffed at,” with Patrick Heusinger as “a family man employed as a servant in Lydia’s home who is in fact a Mechanical, but after one of his daughters is killed in a car accident, he proves to be ‘defective’ as he’s plagued with forbidden emotions like grief and loss.” This one sounds promising.

Cult (CW)

Silence of the lambs / Seven-esque drama that tracks the investigation of a string of mysterious deaths and disappearances surrounding the show-within-a-show entitled Cult. A bit iffy genrewise

Dracula (NBC)

Like we don’t have enough vampire shows. Tony Krantz and Colin Callender are developing a period drama at the Peacock and its international channels about Bram Stoker’s signature 1890s vampire, billed as “a big, sweeping international soap opera that is young, sexy and supernatural.” Cole Haddon is penning the script for the potential straight-to-series commitment.

Gotham Untitled Michael Green Project (ABC)

After pursuing a seemingly unsolvable case, a female cop discovers a magical world that exists within New York City.  A world that goes unseen by normal humans, and takes all of the familiar NY landmarks and reinvents them in a magical otherworldly manner

Isabel (NBC)

Isabel is a comedy centering on an otherwise normal middle-class family that wrestles with the challenges of everyday life while raising a daughter (Sophia Mitri Schloss, Grimm) who has magical abilities. Abigail Mavity and Skyler Gisondo also star.

Joey Dakota (CW)

Based on the Israeli format Danny Hollywood. In this romantic-time-travel-musical, a documentary filmmaker travels back in time to the 1990’s where she meets and falls in love with the rock star subject of her film. When she unexpectedly returns to present day, she must find her way back to the past to reunite with her love and prevent his untimely death.

A bizarre twist of fate pulls a man who’s spent 20 years as the editor of a skeptics magazine into one of the most compelling conspiracies in human history.

Zombies & Cheerleaders (CW)

Disney Channel has ordered the music-driven pilot “Zombies and Cheerleaders.” Production on the pilot begins in December in consideration for a Disney Channel series to premiere in 2012. The story follows Zed Necrodopolis, a typical high school student with one small caveat; he happens to be a zombie. Despite a high-tech wristwatch designed to curb any appetite he may have for his classmates, he and his zombie friends remain unpopular with the school’s most influential group, the pom-pom wielding cheerleaders. Never one to back down from a challenge, Zed sets out to improve zombie student body relations and win the attention of Addison, the cheerleading squad’s newest member.

Most of the pilot pickups has been done and casting has started.

No new order to series yet in March but I will keep adding to this report as news comes in. Information on the shows follow this short take on the latest developments.

Good news for Touch who got Kiefer Sutherland cast in it so even if it only got a pilot commitment it looks like a safe bet for spring 2012.

I smell a zombie apocalypse this year after the smashing success of The Walking Dead last year. CW picked up a zombie drama this one about two sisters called Awakening. Is this the zombie Twilight? Lucy Griffiths (who was so feisty in Robin Hood) has landed the lead, Jenna, an attorney in the New York City’s public defender’s office who, like her sister, is a zombie.

17th Precinct (NBC) is a magical police show with some promising people cast that is going to make BSG and Smalleville lovers happy. Kristin Kreuk also seen on Chuck has recently been cast as Susan Longstreet, the wife of Jamie Bamber’s character, Caolan.

Wonder Woman is getting more hot babes. Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers) joins Adrianne Palicki.

The project, from Sony Pictures TV where Moore is under an overall deal, has been described as an adult Harry Potter. The pitch for the drama landed at NBC in September with a big commitment that reportedly included pilot and series penalties totaling close to $2 million. Source: Deadline

Alphas (Syfy) superhero drama

Syfy picks up Alphas for an 11 episodes order in addition to the 90 minute pilot. Production is slated to begin in Toronto early next year for a summer 2011 debut.

It is easy to think of this is yet another superhero show but it has some redeeming features, with the connection to CIA, FBI and Pentagon, the quirky members and the different kind of superpowers the heroes have. On the other hand it is just another plain-cloth superhero drama.

Alphas started life as Section 8 which went to ABC after a bidding war in 2007 but there it cooled off during the writers strike and now Syfy has dusted it off and renamed. Production of the 90 minute Pilot is scheduled to begin in Toronto August 2010 and Syfy is reported to look at a 2011 release. Will the writer behind  X-Men: The Last Stand make this a great show? The pilot will be directed by Jack Bender (Lost).

Alphas follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills. Using physical feats and uniquely advanced mental abilities, this unlikely team takes the law into their own hands and uncovers what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able or willing to solve. These gifted individuals must balance their quirky personalities and disparate backgrounds with their not always visible powers as they work to solve crimes, stop the ticking time bomb and catch the enemy

Cast

  • David Strathairn as Leigh Rosen the overseer/team leader/prescribing doctor and all around mother hen to the team: an eccentric, absent-minded professor at times, who is also a cunning and manipulative power-player willing to bend the rules in pursuit of his objectives.
  • Ryan Cartwright (Bones) as Gary Bell a member of the team who has Asperger’s syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder. His Alpha ability allows him to “read” wireless transmissions passing through the ether – e-mails, cell phone communications, television signals, etc.
  • Warren Christie (Happy Town, October Road) as Christian Hicks a new recruit on the team with a history of psychological problems, drug abuse and an anti-authoritarian streak whose Alpha skill is hyperkinesis – near-perfect dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
  • Malik Yoba (Defying Gravity, New York Undercover) as Bill Harken a former FBI agent from working class roots. Harken’s Alpha skill allows him to intentionally activate a “fight-or-flight mechanism” producing a power surge of adrenaline giving him increased strength, speed and immunity from pain.
  • Laura Mennell (Watchmen) as Nina Theroux a complicated team member, seductive, intelligent and confident, Nina’s Alpha ability allows her to influence people into doing whatever she wishes but her power can sometimes spin out of control. Her skill also comes with a personal drawback in that she can never be sure if anyone’s feelings for her are real. Nina was the first team member enlisted by Dr. Rosen to whom she remains extremely loyal.
  • Azita Ghanizada will have a regular role if the show goes forward as a series. She plays Rachel who, from an early age, has been able to “hyper-intensify” her senses, one at a time—vision, hearing, taste, and smell. Her mother and father—who are conservative parents—thought she was cursed and discouraged this unique and amazing ability. Overly sensitive—literally—Rachel has always felt ashamed and rejected. With Dr. Rosen’s help and encouragement, she’s learning to appreciate her skill and grow increasingly confident and adventurous.
  • Callum Keith Rennie plays Don Wilson, a Washington bureaucrat, and Lee Rosen’s superior and contact inside the Pentagon.

Unfortunately, the powers only work when they are in close proximity to each other. Though the last thing they want to do is stay together, they’ll need to try if they hope to overcome the newly arrived other-worldly forces that threaten to destroy them and anyone else who gets in the way. Based on a comic (Turning in to SCiFi TV)

Blood and Chrome (Syfy)

I am more excited about this than I am of Caprica but that is not saying much. The ending of BSG sort of ruined most of this world for me.

Set ten years into the first Cylon war (which would place it about four decades before BSG). The pilot centers on a young William Adama. Right now, it’s still just a TV movie that might become a series…

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20′s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet’ the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.

Pasqualino will star as the young, talented fighter pilot William Adama, a recent Academy graduate who finds himself assigned to the newest Battlestar in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Full of ambition and in pursuit of the intense action that the Cylon war promises, Adama quickly finds himself at odds with Coker (Cotton), the battle-weary officer to whom he reports. With 45 days left in his tour of duty, Coker desires an end to battle just as much as Adama craves the start of it. Though they clash at first, the two men forge an unlikely bond when a routine mission turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet.

Cast:

  • Beka Kelly, a software genius that Eick describes as being “enigmatic and seemingly impenetrable… [someone who] gives Adama a run for his money.” Young Adama will connect with her in the pilot as he experiences his first taste of combat fresh out of cadet school. Beka has yet to be cast.
  • Luke Pasqualino (Skins — U.K.) as Adama.
  • Ben Cotton (Hellcats, Riese) plays Adama’s commanding officer Coker.
  • Lili Bordan, who will play Dr. Beka Kelly, a Ph.D. who worked for Graystone Industries that created the Cylon robots. Currently assigned to a secret military mission, Beka and Adama quickly establish a rapport

No other specifics, including the studio attached, were given.

Cloak & Dagger (ABC)

Is the comic any good?

Drama based on the marvel comic of the same name about Tyrone “Ty” Johnson and Tandy Bowen, teen runaways in new york city who develop superpowers – he can engulf enemies in darkness, she can emit daggers of light – after being forced to take experimental drugs.

Death Valley (MTV)

This could be fun.

Death Valley is a scripted horror-comedy that captures the exploits of the men and women of the Undead Task Force (UTF) – an elite branch of the LAPD that was formed in 2009 when the San Fernando Valley became overrun by zombies, vampires and werewolves. While scientists frantically search for an answer to what caused the outbreak, the UTF is responsible for eradicating the monsters, or at least containing them to the Valley. Documenting each case and paranormal encounter is a daring camera crew that is embedded with the UTF from the beginning to end of every shift. As a result, the documentary crew becomes central to the storytelling and is as much a part of the action as the young cops and the undead they encounter. Always alternating between humor and horror, Death Valley at times borrows from the conventions of reality television creating a visual style that is a blend of follow documentary and sci-fi action.

Bryan Callen (“How I Met Your Mother”) has been tapped for the lead role on the upcoming series, “a scripted horror-comedy that captures the exploits of the men and women of the Undead Task Force (UTF) – an elite branch of the LAPD that was formed in 2009 when the San Fernando Valley became overrun by zombies, vampires and werewolves.” He’ll play Captain Jim Dashell in the half-hour, which also stars Caity Lotz, Charlie Sanders and Tania Raymonde. Austin Reading, Julie Kellman Reading, Eric Weinberg and Tim Healy are the executive producers.

Cast: Bryan Callen as Jim Dashell, Caity Lotz as TBA, Charlie Sanders as TBA, Tania Raymonde as TBA

Game of Thrones (HBO)

HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s acclaimed novel series. Hopes to do seven seasons — one for each novel in the series. Producer D.B. Weiss says it won’t be a huge, splashy series with thousands of orcs stampeding across the screen. Instead, it’ll stay true to the books, and most of the battles will take place offstage.

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Craig Silverstein (“Standoff”) and British scribe Kelly Marcel co-wrote the script based on an idea of Marcel’s. Silverstein, whose involvement is in second position to his “Nikita” pilot at The CW, and Marcel then would executive produce alongside Aaron Kaplan, who packaged the project. Said film will spawn the TV series, the first season of which will bridge films one and two followed by a second film that leads into season two, and so forth. The duo will executive produce alongside Howard’s Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer and King himself. As for specifics, “Tower” revolves around Roland Deschain, “the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, and humanity’s last hope to save a civilization that will crumble unless he finds the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to be the nexus of all universes.”

Eerie, dreamlike, set in a world that is weirdly related to our own, The Gunslinger introduces Roland Deschain of Gilead, of In-World that was, as he pursues his enigmatic antagonist to the mountains that separate the desert from the Western Sea. Roland is a solitary figure, perhaps accursed, who with a strange singlemindedness traverses an exhausted, almost timeless landscape. The people he encounters are left behind, or worse—left dead. At a way station, however, he meets Jake, a boy from a particular time (1977) and a particular place (New York City), and soon the two are joined—khef, ka, and ka-tet. The mountains lie before them. So does the man in black and, somewhere far beyond…the Dark Tower.

Zeros (Syfy)

In this 1/2-hour single-camera satire, when the zombie population of Marshall City overcomes the 30-foot barrier separating the infected people from the rest of the city, the Zombie Extermination and Removal Operations company (the Zeros) are called in to keep the peace. When they can get out of their own way long enough to focus on a case, they are pretty effective with very unorthodox methods.

It has been heating up on the development scene lately with a whole bunch of pilot orders and some stray castings. No new order to series yet in February but I will keep adding to this report as news comes in. Information on the shows follow this short take on the latest developments.

Good news for Touch who got a pilot order from Fox. Edit: Kiefer Sutherland has been cast in it so even if it only got a pilot commitment it looks like a safe bet for spring 2012.

I smell a zombie apocalypse this year after the smashing success of The Walking Dead last year. CW picked up a zombie drama this one about two sisters called Awakening. Is this the zombie Twilight?

NBC has picked up a number of new pilots among them something that has been characterized as ‘an adult harry potter’. 17th Precinct is a police drama set in the magical town of Excelsior – Eureka meets Harry Potter? I wonder who is the new sheriff? and please pick a new name. Edit2: more casting has been made.

Wonder Woman returned from the dead when NBC picked up it for a pilot. That show has more lives than a cat. Edit: Wonder woman has been cast.

NBC also picked up a pilot for Grim about a special police in a world inspired by the Grim brothers’ fairy tales. So you kicked the old lady into the oven and closed the door did you? Edit: David Giuntoli has landed the lead…

Some of our shows is about to leave development and become live series. Camelot is a sexy more fleshier take on the Arthurian saga from Starz the company behind Spartacus Blood & Sand and it premieres February 25.

It didn’t go so well for The Cape who premiered last month. I have enjoyed the show but it has been struggling with ratings and critics alike. To be honest it is not the best TV I have seen.

But there has been more new pilot orders.

  • Heavenly (CW) about a former angel attorney
  • Once upon a time (ABC) is a Lost wanna be
  • Halleluljah (ABC) supernatural fight between good and evil in the town with the same name. Edit: Lead has been cast
  • Powers (FX) – cops investigates super villians. *** NEW PILOT ORDER ***
  • REM (NBC) Inception-style thriller Edit: casting has begun
  • Secret Circle (CW) a drama about a young girl that discovers she is a witch. Edit: Casting has started

Rumor says that Ghost Angels got skipped? Edit: but that is not true, it got picked up for a NBC pilot too.

Syfy has started development on Faerborne a story about a guy that discovers he is a changeling and goes on and fight goblins. A male Lost Girl?

Edit: Casting news for Blood & Chrome

Edit: Seems I missed that ABC picked up The Nine Lives of Chloe King for a ten episode series

Ordered to Script

17th Pricinct (NBC)

An adult Harry Potter? I am game, that could be fun. Previously known as Untitled Ronald Moore Project

NBC has given a pilot order to 17th Precinct, an ensemble cop drama with supernatural elements from Battlestar Galactica developer/executive producer Ron Moore. The project, from Sony Pictures TV where Moore is under an overall deal, has been described as an adult Harry Potter. It is set in the fictional town of Excelsior where magic and supernatural elements rule over science. The pitch for the drama landed at NBC in September with a big commitment that reportedly included pilot and series penalties totaling close to $2 million. Source: Deadline

  • Jamie Bamber (BSG, Outcasts) will play a homicide detective at the precinct.
  • Eamonn Walker has signed up for a lead role. Deadline reports that Walker will play Detective Chief Inspector Wilder Blanks

This looks like silly fun, no news on the pilot yet.

A comedy pilot set in space from the makers of Reno 911. The show is part-scripted and part-improvised, just like Reno 911. (THR) The pilot is set a thousand years in the future, aboard the United Nations peacekeeping spaceship: The USS Alabama. It follows the crew, who are in the sixth year of the their seven-year mission to maintain peace and enforce treaties between planets in their jurisdiction: (Deadline) Sector 187-G. The show will follow the heart- pounding action as our crew visits hostile planets, meets alien life-forms, and tries to have sex with each other in their tiny, metal bunk beds. The pilot will be shot in the Los Angeles area in September. (tfc)

Cast: Brandon Johnson as TBA, Mindy Sterling as Doc, Natasha Leggero as Roxy Sexbot, Robert Ben Garant as #2, Thomas Lennon as Glen Frenchman

After months of emotional tumult, Edgar and Mallory call their relationship quits. As they say their final goodbyes, the ex-lovers are nearly hit by a meteorite that, it turns out, imbues them with extraordinary powers.

Camelot (Starz)

This show has had a long journey. Starz has done some real good shows so I have good hopes on some fantasy entertainment.

Starz and GK-TV announced today that Joseph Fiennes, Eva Green, Jamie Campbell Bower and Tamsin Egerton have signed on to the upcoming series “Camelot.” “Camelot” will take a fresh approach to telling the Arthur story, and casting Fiennes as the wizard Merlin and Eva Green, in her first television role, as the powerful sorceress Morgana will help set the tone for the series. The essential roles of Arthur and Guinevere will be played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Tamsin Egerton, respectively.

CAST: Claire Forlani as Igraine, Eva Green as Morgana, Jamie Campbell Bower as Arthur, Joseph Fiennes as Merlin, Peter Mooney as Kay, Tamsin Egerton as Guinevere

The showrunner told Collider that the series would take its inspiration from Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur.

“We have a grand plan, which…will allow for multiple seasons,” he explained. “We’re starting right from the birth of Arthur, and we’ll go through and try to tell the truth that lies behind the myth.”

Chibnall confirmed that the show would present a realistic take on the Arthurian legends.

“These are the events that could have contributed to these myths, because myths grow, change and shift in the re-telling over time,” he said. “What was interesting to me…was excavating what it might be like to have lived then and how these stories might have come about.”

However, he admitted that characters such as Merlin (Joseph Fiennes) would still experiment with magical forces.

“The magic is very much a part of our storytelling,” he claimed. “What powers Merlin has, how much he can control them [and] how that plays into his character, is really [an important] part of the story.”

Chloe (CW)

Marti Noxon (“Mad Men”) has snagged a script order from the network for a new drama about “a young female con artist who dies and returns to earth as a Divine Covert Operator.” She’ll supervise Jason Fuchs (“Holy Rollers”), who’s penning the pilot, and executive produce alongside her production partner Dawn Parouse. No other specifics, including the studio attached, were given.

Cloak & Dagger (ABC)

[top]

Department Zero (ABC)

It is based on the best-selling Joe Ledger novels by Jonathan Maberry (It should be said that those books are Zombie related – My comment). Described as is a high-octane techno-thriller, the project centers on the Department of Military Sciences – a special unit that fights enemies armed with cutting-edge technology.

Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

The cast has changed many times but seems to have stabilized.

Ghost Angels (NBC)

Dramedy about a young woman in los angeles who can talk to the dead, helping the spirits as much as they are helping her. Rachel Bilson is the only one to have been cast so far. NBC has skipped Ghost Angels for the upcoming 2011 season and the status is unknown at the moment.

Grave Sight (CBS)

Supernatural drama based on Charlaine Harris’ Harper Connelly series. A script is expected in early 2011. I have not read this series but I guess I have to now. True Blood is among the best on television

The overarching mystery across all four novels is their search for Harper’s sister, who disappeared on her way home from school and has never been found. There are currently four Harper Connelly novels: Grave Sight, Grave Surprise, An Ice Cold Grave and Grave Secret.

Once Upon a Time (ABC)

Okay … another LOST wannabe this time from the exec producers of LOST. I am a bit intrigued so I would like to know more. It has been ordered to pilot according to Deadline.

“Lost” exec producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have sold their hourlong drama script “Once Upon a Time” to ABC.

Pilot, from ABC Studios, is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy with a strong mystery element. Premise is a modern-day take on fairy tales, with a female protagonist who comes from a unique background. Show takes place in a small Maine town during the present time.

Despite the fairy tale premise, show will have a strong human emotional center. Similar to “Lost,” there will be a large ensemble.

Terra Nova

Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin are on track to team for a potential new drama at the network about “a family from 100 years in the future who travel back in time 150 million years to the strange and inhospitable environs of prehistoric Earth.” 20th Century Fox Television is behind the hour, which could be ordered straight to series due to its elaborate sets and visual effects. Spielberg and Chernin have subsequently been courted as executive producers as well, where they would be joined by the former’s DreamWorks Television partners Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank and the latter’s Chernin Entertainment TV topper Katherine Pope.

Brannon Braga has reportedly been tapped as the showrunner of Steven Spielberg’s much-ballyhooed sci-fi drama, about “a family from 100 years in the future who travel back in time 150 million years to prehistoric Earth ruled by dinosaurs.” The project, which is being eyed for a direct-to-series commitment, was penned by Craig Silverstein and Kelly Marcel with Spielberg attached to executive produce alongside Aaron Kaplan, Peter Chernin, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank and Katherine Pope. Last month, Braga inked a two-year, seven-figure overall deal with “Nova” producer 20th Century Fox Television.

20th Century Fox TV has found the youths who’ll help round out Jason O’Mara’s family in the upcoming time-traveling drama Terra Nova. Landon Liboiron (DeGrassi: The Next Generation) will play Josh, the 17-year-old of Jim (O’Mara) and Elisabeth (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Shelley Conn) Shannon who also finds a father figure in Frank Taylor (Avatar’s Stephen Lang). Newcomer Naomi Scott will play his sister Maddy, a bright 15-year-old, while newcomer Alana Mansour (no photo) has signed on as Zoe, the youngest member of the Shannon clan who is smuggled into the time-traveling portal that takes everyone to the Terra Nova settlement.

Other actors who have previously joined the high-concept series include Mido Hamada (24) and Allison Miller (Boston Legal). The drama that bows next May still has one more series regular role to fill before it starts production. The series takes place 100 years in the future.

Christine Adams (The Whole Truth) will play Mira — a battle-hardened resident of Terra Nova who gets to know the Shannon family.

The Dark Tower (NBC)

Oscar-winners Akiva Goldsman and Ron Howard are spearheading the effort with Howard directing the first part of a planned film trilogy from a script by Goldsman.

There are some new mid-season developments in science fiction and fantasy department. Alphas got an order for series just the other day. That Syfy got themselves a superhero show is not a big surprise. The choice was between Alphas and Three Inches. That doesn’t mean Inches was axed, quite the opposite, it is being redeveloped, which I assume is for a new pilot/script?

The Cape is about to leave the list for life as a real airing show on January 4. It got Summer Glau as a sidekick blogger to our masked hero. The trailers and sneak peeks looks promising I can’t wait. The hero looks good too.

The British are hot on new genre shows with Dirk Gently (BBC), Outcasts (also BBC, see my fall season post. I expected it earlier) and  Eternal Law (ITV). Dirk Gently looks really crazy on that trailer in a Dr Who rebirth kind of way. I loved the books so that is probably one series I want to tune in to. I have high hopes for Outcasts as it sounds like it has a bit of Firefly vibe to it. Why don’t they schedule it?

HBO are a good provider of genre entertainment (True Blood is one of my favorite shows). Now looking at Game of Thrones I am even more impressed. The ten minutes ‘trailer‘ they released is beyond promising, it is like a gritty LOTR. Another show I can’t wait on.

The rumors around Terra Nova is that there are some kind of troubles with it. It keeps getting postponed…

To be honest I like most of the developments but I wish there was a bit more space based adventures.

Dirk Gently (BBC4)

[Link to Trailer]

It has been confirmed that BBC Four is to pilot an adaptation of Douglas Adams’s novel Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. The book is to be adapted for TV by Howard Overman, the creator of Channel 4 comedy drama Misfits, and will be made for BBC Four by ITV Studios in 2011.The science-fiction comedy is about a private detective who believes in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. As a result, Gently’s “Holistic Detective Agency” solves the whole crime and finds the whole person, but because business is so low on the ground his main business tends to involve finding missing cats. It was a fun read not on level with Hitchhikers’ but good enough. The writers spill that they used the basics from the book to write a new story.

Stephen Mangan will play Douglas Adams’ eccentric detective Dirk Gently in a new BBC Four drama based on the author’s cult novel, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.

He is joined by Darren Boyd as his unwitting sidekick Richard Macduff and Helen Baxendale as Richard’s girlfriend Susan in the adaptation by Bafta-winning Howard Overman.

Anti-hero Dirk Gently operates his eponymous detective agency based on the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. Perpetually broke, hopelessly chaotic and utterly infuriating, most people suspect Dirk is nothing more than a cheap conman. And they might be right – but nevertheless his methods, though unusual, do often produce surprising results.

When Dirk sets out to solve an apparently simple and harmless disappearance of a cat from an old lady’s house, he unwittingly uncovers a double murder which, in turn, leads to a host of even more extraordinary events

The Cape

Goodie, another superhero series for mid season.

“The Cape” is a one-hour drama series starring David Lyons (“ER”) as Vince Faraday, an honest cop on a corrupt police force, who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. He is forced into hiding, leaving behind his wife, Dana (Jennifer Ferrin, “Life on Mars”) and son, Trip (Ryan Wynott, “Flash Forward”). Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken Palm City, Faraday becomes “The Cape” his son’s favorite comic book superhero — and takes the law into his own hands. Rounding out the cast are James Frain (“The Tudors”) as billionaire Peter Fleming – The Cape’s nemesis – who moonlights as the twisted killer: Chess; Keith David (“Death at a Funeral”) as Max Malini, the ringleader of a circus gang of bank robbers who mentors Vince Faraday and trains him to be The Cape; Summer Glau (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”) as Orwell, an investigative blogger who wages war on crime and corruption in Palm City; and Dorian Missick (“Six Degrees”) as Marty Voyt, a former police detective and friend to Faraday.

Learned from casting:

Dorian Missick (“Six Degrees”) as Marty Voyt, a former police detective and friend of Vince’s who tries to recruit him to join the Lynx Corporation, an ominous company.

James Frain (“The Tudors”) as Peter Fleming, the Chairman and CEO of the Blackwater-esque Lynx Corporation, who moonlights as “Chess,” a murderous villain. Chess is described as wearing a tight black mask in which only his freakish eyes – contact lenses bearing a rook and knight emblem – are visible.

Summer Glau, who has probably starred in more cult sci-fi series than any other actress, with stints on Fox’s “Firefly,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and “Dollhouse,” has joined NBC’s superhero-themed drama pilot “The Cape” in a leading role. Glau will play Orwell, a cute and intrepid investigative blogger who fearlessly goes after corrupt cops and costumed bad guys. And yes, she gets physical and is quite capable of kicking ass (THR)

Jennifer Ferrin (“Life on Mars”) will play Dana Faraday (“pretty, no pushover”), the man’s wife according to tfc

Keith David (“Death at a Funeral”) will play Max Malini, the leader of “The Carnival of Crime” – a group of carnival-themed bank robbers, who becomes Vince’s mentor. His character is further detailed as a showman/magician/escape-artist with “a faded-Errol-Flynn-feel about him.”

Ryan Wynott (“FlashForward”) will play Trip, Vince’s eight-year-old son, whose love of the fictional black-masked-super-hero inspires Vince to become the real thing.
Meanwhile, Vinnie Jones and Martin Klebba are set to guest star . Jones is believed to be playing Dominic Raoul, better known as the villain “Gator,” whose freakish skin condition gives him the appearance of green and gold scales. Klebba then is set as Rollo, the little person strongman in the Carnival of Crime. (tfc)

The Dark Tower (NBC)

Oscar-winners Akiva Goldsman and Ron Howard are spearheading the effort with Howard directing the first part of a planned film trilogy from a script by Goldsman.

This is a heads up on the science fiction and fantasy television development scene.

There is a disturbing lack of space based science fiction but a formidable avalanche of superhero and supernatural shows in development. Zombies are the new vampires.

Dirk Gently (BBC4)

Sam Raimi and Joshua Donen’s Stars Road Entertainment has booked two more drama projects. They’ll join the previously announced “Lancaster,” about a Scotland yard detective who joins the LAPD, from Andrew Lipsitz at CBS. Newly revealed are “Smokers,” about “a documentary crew following working class heroes who exterminate alien threats in deep space,” at FOX; and an untitled hour about a top female prosecutor in Los Angeles who’s billed as a “female vigilante with a law license.” Brian K. Vaughan (“Lost”) is behind the former, which is set up at FOX; and Dee Johnson (“The Good Wife”) is penning the latter, set up at ABC. Raimi and Donen will then executive produce alongside the aforementioned creators for Sony Pictures Television, where they have a first-look deal.
