Stargate Universe 1.09 – Visitation [TV Review]

It is quite funny when Rush tries to educate the crew about the ‘message’ from before the Big Bang and the only thing they are there for is fixing the still and he gives up in disgust.

That’s when the shuttle appears and the music goes all Moonbase Alpha. The Destiny has a Visitation from the dead. Robert Cain the messiahs and his fellow Edenits are back for a final farewell? Turns out they are dead and the powerful aliens that cooked up a solar system back where we left them last season decided to listen to Roberts prayers and bring shadows of them back to the destiny, giving them a new shiny shuttle as a bonus which might be the real reason for this metaphysical and interesting episode. Don’t worry they have not discovered god and Rush give a fairly good argument why the Visitation should not be gods work when Cain tries to convince him.

It takes some time before the crew figures out what they are but they notice from the beginning that that they don’t like being around soulless people. There are of course some paranoia and stuff along the way but hey who wouldn’t be suspicious in this situation.

TJ goes through a though time as she realizes her baby isn’t with them but she is resilient and regains some of herself in the end.

Chloe starts to say goodbye to people, seems like she has given up the fight against the Blueberry. Greer stands out a bit this episode too. He has an interesting talk with Scott about Chloe explaining about the role of a master sergeant. Calling him a butter bar lieutenant! I had to laugh when I heard that. Scott took it quite well all things considered. Greer then went on to a very strong emotional talk with Chloe where he asked her forgiveness in case he would have to kill her in the future and she gave it to him. It was a strong and utterly believable scene in my opinion. Chloe sends Scott away on the recommendation of Greer.

This might be one of the best SGU episodes so far and next week is the last episode before hiatus. I feel a long cliffhanger coming. The destiny comes across an old space battle, their arrival triggers a revival. The Destiny on the brink of destruction from a random ship graveyard or is this the replicators again, this time replicating a battle again and again? Time will tell.

Stargate Universe 2.08 – Malice [TV Review]

You all know what happens when the hero’s girlfriend gets killed by the bad guy. He goes on a rampage of revenge and nails the bad guy no matter how many government agencies want to keep him alive because he knows tings, Right?

That is exactly what happens in Malice. The bad guy is especially deserving. He has been foul since we first saw him. It is Simeon, the Lucian alliance patriot who realizes that Ginn, Eli’s new love interest is spilling secret to Homeworld Security. Rush’s new found love Interest Amanda Perry is in Ginn’s body at the time Simeon kills her.

Rush is the one that finds Ginn’s lifeless body. Simeon goes on a killing spree killing guards left to right and arming himself before he escapes through the gate.

Young is doing a good job in this episode, he chats convincingly with the boffins on the bridge and he acts like a leader. I like that.

It is emotional when TJ closes Ginn’s eyes with finality. Eli is shocked but he is trying not to show it. Eli is probably the guy most of us identify with and root for. He was finally getting lucky after being the third wheel for so long, it is sad but it is also good television. He will come out of this different, the question is how. Don’t get me wrong I love Ginn.

While they search for Simeon they learn Amanda is dead on earth too but they also learn that Simeon has information on the attack planed on Earth. That gets Rush out of the room he goes after Simeon.

Simeon took a hostage and booby trapped her at the gate hoping to catch the whole pursuit force in one blow but Rush beats them to it and radios back stopping them from entering while disabling the proximity fuse of the mine. It will still explode but it gives him time to throw it away. The explosion was significant but the slow-motion effect was a little much.

Rush goes after him with a kino. But they keep getting ambushed, he even lures Lt Boobs into a trap, she survives but not all of her squad is so lucky. The man hunt take time so they have to do something about the jump clock back at the ship.

Eli tries to stall the clock but they have nine hours to do what Rush has not succeeded to do in six months. Chloe was only in briefly but her blueberry powers, which she doesn’t seem to have full control over whatever she says managed to reprogram Destiny’s course so they could jump back. Wonder what that means. Are we going back to the Blueberries now? Their absence is starting to get old. Chloe tries to talk to Eli. Eli is losing it and wants to go after Eli with a gun but Young manages to convince him to stay.

Scott and Rush have a very mature conversation, a lot of good talks that shows progress this episode. Interesting that the first thing Rush does is lie about that he found a way to track Simeon.

In the end Rush goes after Simeon alone, after Greer gets wounded and Scott takes him back to the gate, since time is running out.

The way it all works out in the end is pure Rush. Rush has to live with a lot. And now he has to add the choice he made today. The consequences for humanity might be huge.

Good story and damn good television.

Next week is when the Destiny gets its shuttle back, and some old friends come and visit. I can’t wait, only two more episodes before the hiatus now? It looks more and more likely that it will be some cliffhanger involving Chloe and the Blueberries but I could be wrong.

Stargate Universe 2.07 – The Greater Good [TV Review]

Tonight’s episode of Stargate Universe was a pivotal one. We finally learn Destiny’s mission and the crew finally learn about the bridge. They come out of FTL close to another derelict that looks like it has been in a battle.

Since destiny doesn’t have any shuttles any more they decide to hitch a ride with a Kino. Young and Rush hitch over without any Redskirts. They find massive battle damage; the whole bridge is blown away. Things get a bit interesting when they find empty pods like the ones the aliens on the seed ship were using. I wonder if they are some kind of space pirates or space nomads living on what they can scavenge from derelicts. I have a feeling we will meet them again. Maybe they are enemies of the blueberries too? They have not been that hostile.

Rush’s fiddling somehow sets off the engines of the derelict pushing the ship away from Destiny stranding them there. Rush turn to Doctor Amanda Perry from earth to secretly use his control of the Destiny to come and get them. Amanda is confused by Rush’s need for secrecy. She gets the ship to turn. She is a real bad liar so Eli doesn’t believe her and tracks down the bridge and surprises her there.

Young goes a bit over the edge when he overhear Rush and discover the truth. Young blames Rush for the death of that young pilot. There is a short fight and they have yet another heart to heart where Young get some though truths in his face. He has failed as a leader.

That is also when we learn about Destiny’s mission. The ancients found structure in the cosmic background radiation that revealed structures older than the universe. Destiny is on “A mission to read a message from before time”. I hope for god’s sake it’s not from God. That would be way to close to BSG and Lost. Imho two good series with crappy endings. I pray it is not so.

Eli gets to shine a bit this episode, which is about time. But I am afraid dark times are ahead for him. Wray interrupt his close encounter with Ginn and she stones to Earth to report on the Lucian Alliance’s plans to attack it. This doesn’t go down well with Greer’s favorite Lucian. Eli figure out Rush’s cover up and lead the others to the bridge. He also saves the day figuring out how to return the unlucky two from the derelict that is tumbling after Amanda tailgated it.

They also touched on the moral issues of lending some one’s body again after Rush almost has sex with Amanda. Eli walks in on them before it goes too far and he lets her know what he thinks about it too. The ending was rather sinister as the Lucian thug walks into Amanda-Ginn’s cabin as soon as she is alone. I think I will hate what is going to happen there.

Rush is like an emotional yo-yo. He twists and turns every other episode, great acting but a character hard to love.

The Fall season finale draws closer, will it be the blueberries or the pod-brownies making our day?

Next episode brings old friends back to the ship with no clue of what has happened to them.

Stargate Universe 2.03 Awakening [TV Review]

The crew of the Destiny is exploring the ship. No, not their own ship, a seed ship they found drifting.

This sets off all kinds of interesting things. They find enough energy there to dial earth but when they connect the ships aliens that been hibernating on the seed ship starts to tap Destiny of power and Rush is forced to use the Bridge to disconnect the ships and save Destiny revealing more or less that he has discovered the bridge in the first place.

Colonel Telford is left behind on the ship with all the creepy aliens. I imagine how he would feel in that situation. It is chilling. I am sure he will turn up again somewhere down the line.

Colonel Young keep on handling the Lucian Alliance personnel left with mistrust and disdain. Wray on the other hand, starts to make sense. They did kill their leaders to save the crew of the destiny.

I like the way the characters all make sense now. They are also not serving us all the answers on a silver platter. It is obvious something is happening with Chloe, but it is hinted at instead of written on our noses. Chloe got long gorgeous legs, yes but she was also writing on that notebook. But they didn’t show the writing like they could have done.

TJ had a great moment this episode when one of the Lucian tried to get fresh with her she got rough right back and he had to back down. I love TJ.

Rush ends this episode in the captains chair on the bridge. He sits there because he doesn’t want to face the music.

Next episode will be mighty interesting. It looks like it will focus on what is happening with Chloe which is about time. I love this new season of SGU. It is really hitting its stride now.

Stargate Universe Returns [TV Review]

Last season ended with cliffhangers for most of the cast as the Lucian alliance attacked the Destiny. I don’t know what to make of the season premiere. We are obviously setting things up for the rest of the season but there is no clear threat or objective but the mysterious nebula TJ first dreams about and then sees ahead from the observation deck as Destiny finish the jump that was interrupted by the pulsar.

They killed off one of my favorite actresses, Rhona Mitra as Commander Kiva! That is just wrong, take it back! Oh, well I expected that but it is still sad.

I sort of expected more action from the season premiere but I have seen this kind of thing on other shows and it is not necessary a bad thing. We did get introduced to some possible plot threads. Did you spot any more plots to be resolved this season?

  • The alien(s) who created that solar system might be dead ahead of the Destiny.
  • Here at the edge of the universe reality is what you believe in and that kind of metaphysical mumbo jumbo TJ ‘dreamt about/experienced’ is hopefully not going to be the central theme because I can tell you right now that is about the only thing that could get me to stop watching SGU, that and if they kill Lt James. I was really scared when she was hit by lightning.
  • Chloe’s miraculous healing is another thread. It has already been spoiled in the season trailer that she is going to turn alien in some way.
  • The whole crew getting along arc is getting additional fuel from the new Lucian members. They have at least two more fractions to add to the pot.
  • The ship’s real mission will soon be revealed
  • Rush knows or will soon know about the bridge, this was spoiled by the season trailer.
  • Young drinking and going to a bad place.
  • It’s a huge ship; explore it for god’s sake!

One thing disturbed me a little and that was Wray’s very emotional outburst in the infirmary. She has never been that emotional, not even a hint, quite the opposite in fact. Hopefully some kind of characterization background will come along or it is just random emotions for effect.

Girl Power! The Lucian scientist girl kills their crazy leader I like her already.

I think I have to go back and re watch the episode. Maybe it is me being cranky and suffering from premiere overload. Leading all the premieres of this fall into such a short period as this is; is just insane. I don’t remember it hitting me this hard last year, but then it was more spread out wasn’t it?

Anyway, I am really happy SGU is back. It is the series that comes closest to my reading interest.

Lastly I have a question, what is up with Young? Check this picture, it is a screen capture  from this episode.
