Weekly Journal January 17-23

Books you read affect how you feel and this week I have been happy. I think I own most of it to Nathan Lowell’s Owner’s Share. It is such a wonderfully ordinary workplace story. On the other hand I am listening to the gruesome Skinner novel by Neal Asher and hope that it doesn’t say anything significant about me.

I like to push my envelope now and then and this week’s push was into fashion science fiction staring a tailor with an affinity for Yarn. The wonderful cover also weighted into this selection. Jon Armstrong impressed me with this approach to cyberpunk.  It is his second book and I think I have to get his debut Grey.

I expected Aliette de Bodard’s Aztec fantasy mystery series to be my first read this year but the Royal Mail certainly took its time to deliver it so I had time to finish others first. Harbinger of the Storm continues the story of Acatl, High Priest of the Dead as he tries to save the fifth world from star-demons and solve the last series of mysterious murders. The review is scheduled for the 31st but I am half finished with it already so it might appear earlier.

The new season continues and I enjoyed the return of Chuck and Fringe this week. Chuck never fails to make me happy and this Balcony episode didn’t fail to deliver. Fringe returning to Friday didn’t impede its popularity, quite the opposite from the ratings so far. I am curios where the watchers are heading, the ending sounded ominous. The Cape continues to be campy and entertaining.

Being Human the Original Series, Archer and Supernatural returns this week.
